On June 17th, Boreal Orchards delivered their first batch of moss primer to Kiruna as part of the re:moss project. That same day, the EU Council adopted the Nature Restoration Law, the first comprehensive, continent-wide legislation of its kind. The law sets binding targets and obligations for EU member states to rehabilitate at least 20 percent of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050.
Restoring natural ecosystems in mining disturbed landscapes is a crucial yet complex process. A groundbreaking Swedish initiative, which employs moss to accelerate this restoration, is now being heralded as a potential game changer for the global mining industry.
“If it turns out as well as expected, it could set a new standard for the mining industry”, says VAST’s CEO, Matt Baida, about the Vinnova and mining industry financed project, initiated by Daniel Pacurar, Founder and Executive Chairman of Boreal Orchards AB, and featuring four major mining companies, VAST AB and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
The Umeå Biotech Incubator-backed ‘Shades of Green’ project, developed by Boreal Orchards, has created a moss that can be used on buildings, infrastructure and for the regeneration of nature. Now founder Daniel Pacurar is collaborating on a new development project with RISE Processum AB and Ecohelix to maximize moss establishment with the help of by-products from the paper pulp industry.
Umeå Biotech Incubator is expanding. Shades of Green and Cropcision are two new cases in the pre-incubator that work with a mix of biotech and architecture and in agtech with the next generation of sustained release systems.
