The life science incubator Umeå Biotech Incubator is owned by Umeå Universitet Holding, Umeå Kommunföretag and Region Västerbotten.

UBI receives annual core funding from some of our owners – so-called mandator funding. These public financiers all have a strong interest in healthcare improvement, life science research and regional development. They invest in our organisation in order to promote the implementation of scientific knowledge, strengthen evidence in health care and grow life science companies that can contribute to the development of our region.

Their investments are currently multiplied several times due to the national, and international grants awarded to the incubator. In total, the annual mandatory funding covers less than one-fifth of the incubators’ current turnover.

The Erling-Persson Family Foundation
Knowledge derived from academic research needs support to successfully take the step from academia to industry. To produce high quality complementary data is costly and often requires you to look beyond the traditional funding and research grants.

Through a long-term partnership, the Erling-Persson Family Foundation and Umeå Biotech Incubator, have created more favorable conditions for innovative researchers who want to evaluate the business potential of scientific business ideas. With our support, the early cases at UBI can conduct these necessary activities early on and verify their novel research findings.

Awarded national competitive grants
Support to high quality incubators – Excellence programme

The Swedish Innovation Agency – Vinnova – has rated UBI as one of Sweden’s best performing Incubators since 2012 when we first got selected for the “Excellence programme”. In 2017 Vinnova granted UBI excellence status for the third time running and pointed out the large positive impact that this type of organisation has on a region.

Vinnova works aim to strengthen innovativeness, aid sustainable growth and benefiting society. Vinnova has a strong connection to both research, development, innovation and successful products, services and processes, which are based on scientific knowledge.

The Kempes Foundations – are two foundations in memory of the Swedish industrialists, Johan Carl Kempe and Seth Kempe. Only applications from institutions located in Norrbotten, Västerbotten, and Västernorrland counties will be considered. Within these counties, priority is given to areas where Mo and Domsjö AB and other companies owned by the Kempe family have had their operations.

Through a long-term partnership, the Kempe Foundations and Umeå Biotech Incubator, have created more favorable conditions for innovative researchers who want to evaluate the business potential of scientific business ideas.
