Boreal Orchards is taking the next step in ecosystem restoration. With support from Vinnova (Sweden’s Innovation Agency) and industry partners, the company will develop methods to restore reindeer lichen in disturbed mining landscapes. The four-year project, ”symbios”, is funded with a total of SEK 15.5 million and brings together eight partners – including a Canadian mining company and the Swedish Sami Association.
The Moss Man Daniel Pacurar was part of a Swedish business delegation that visited Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. Daniel is part of Umeå Biotech Incubator with Boreal Orchards and the re:moss project, and we contacted Daniel to learn more about the trip.
From December 2-13, Daniel Pacurar, an eco-tech innovator from northern Sweden, will join global leaders in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for UNCCD COP16, a climate conference focused on combating drought and desertification. Daniel has been invited to hold a seminar to present his innovative re:moss concept.
“With the help of the re:moss concept and technology, we aim to support the countries and regions facing these challenges,” says Daniel, Founder and Executive Chairman of Boreal Orchards.
On June 17th, Boreal Orchards delivered their first batch of moss primer to Kiruna as part of the re:moss project. That same day, the EU Council adopted the Nature Restoration Law, the first comprehensive, continent-wide legislation of its kind. The law sets binding targets and obligations for EU member states to rehabilitate at least 20 percent of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050.
Restoring natural ecosystems in mining disturbed landscapes is a crucial yet complex process. A groundbreaking Swedish initiative, which employs moss to accelerate this restoration, is now being heralded as a potential game changer for the global mining industry.
“If it turns out as well as expected, it could set a new standard for the mining industry”, says VAST’s CEO, Matt Baida, about the Vinnova and mining industry financed project, initiated by Daniel Pacurar, Founder and Executive Chairman of Boreal Orchards AB, and featuring four major mining companies, VAST AB and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
The Umeå Biotech Incubator-backed ‘Shades of Green’ project, developed by Boreal Orchards, has created a moss that can be used on buildings, infrastructure and for the regeneration of nature. Now founder Daniel Pacurar is collaborating on a new development project with RISE Processum AB and Ecohelix to maximize moss establishment with the help of by-products from the paper pulp industry.
