The 30th edition of BIO-Europe will take place from November 4–6 in Stockholm, attracting 5,500 participants from 60 countries and approximately 2,800 companies.
This marks Umeå’s first participation in the event, part of its larger strategy to attract new life science companies to the area.
“We’re confident that our offer is attractive, and we need to meet companies where they are. Our goal is to increase the number of life science employees in Umeå from the current 1,200 to 2,000 by 2030, and a key step is to attract a company with at least 500 employees to establish themselves here,” says Peter Juneblad, Umeå’s Director of Business Development.
“For us, BIO-Europe will serve as an important gauge of the overall industry and a chance to showcase what we have to offer,” he adds.
Part of the Swedish pavilion
At BIO-Europe, Umeå will be part of the Business Sweden Swedish pavilion and host two mini-seminars in collaboration with Umeå Biotech Incubator.
“We’ve chosen to highlight two areas where Umeå University excels in research. One seminar, led by Fredrik Almqvist (director of UCMR and co-founder of QureTech Bio), will focus on antimicrobial resistance, the other will cover ALS. Umeå has strong research in this area and a leading diagnostic company, UmanDiagnostics. Professor Thomas Brännström leads the session and Niklas Norgren, VP and Managing Director of UmanDiagnostics, is among others part of the panel discussion” explains Andreas Lindberg, business coach at UBI.
He sees BioEurope as an important platform for showcasing Umeå’s expertise.
“Umeå is truly a Life Science City. We offer world-class research and infrastructure, a top university hospital running clinical trials, and a growing industry. With available land, renewable energy, clean water, and an excellent quality of life, we have everything in place for organic growth and external investments.”
