“This agreement represents an important milestone for Boreal Orchards. It reflects the global growing demand for Nature-based Solutions that can help restore ecosystems and biodiversity in challenging mining environments,” says Daniel Pacurar, CEO and founder of Umeå Biotech Incubator-supported Boreal Orchards.
Under the agreement, Boreal Orchards will work alongside the new partner´s Legacy and Innovation and Environment teams to support the rehabilitation of active mine sites and legacy tailings facilities.
re:moss establishes a living moss layer
The targeted sites include steep rock slopes, exposed mineral substrates and subarctic environments where conventional revegetation has proven difficult.
At the core of the partnership is the company’s proprietary re:moss® method. Boreal Orchards collects pioneer mosses native to each site, propagates them in Sweden, and returns them as a concentrated biological primer for large-scale application. The technology establishes a living moss layer on barren mineral surfaces. By reducing erosion and improving moisture retention, it creates the foundation needed for natural ecosystem recovery.
Strict biosecurity approach
Importantly, it helps establish the conditions required for slow-growing lichens, a critical component of northern ecosystems and an important food source for caribou populations.
“Our technology addresses a critical biological bottleneck by helping nature establish itself where recovery would otherwise take decades,” says Daniel Pacurar.
The solution follows a strict biosecurity approach, ensuring that no non-native species are introduced into local ecosystems.
“The use of native pioneer species is fundamental to our approach,” says Daniel Pacurar.
“We are not replacing natural ecosystems. We are helping natural recovery start sooner by restoring the biological foundation required for long-term ecosystem development.”
First large-scale applications in 2027
Field sampling at the Canadian sites was completed in September 2026. The collected moss material will be propagated and scaled up in Boreal Orchards’ facilities in Sweden throughout the winter, with the first large-scale field applications planned for 2027.
