Life Science in Focus as GMP Approval Boosts Umeå’s Strategic Position

Construction of the facility in Umeå began in 2021. Diamyd Medical has now received GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification and a manufacturing authorization from the Swedish Medical Products Agency for the production of biological investigational medicinal products.
“With this approval, the facility can play an important role for both Umeå and Sweden’s preparedness in a changing geopolitical landscape,” says Sofia Mayans, Head of Manufacturing Site in Umeå.

Manufacturing collaboration strengthens life science in northern Sweden

Diamyd Medical has expanded its manufacturing strategy through a long‑term collaboration with APL in Umeå and a strategic partnership with NorthX Biologics, a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) based in Matfors, Sweden. Together, the parties will further develop and scale up production of the biological drug candidate retogatein (rhGAD65) in preparation for potential future commercialisation.

A recruitment drive is underway at Diamyd Medical’s new vaccine facility in Umeå after the company announced it is moving production of the GAD65 protein, the active substance in the diabetes vaccine Diamyd, from abroad to Sweden.
“This move gives us greater control and more knowledge about our study drug. Personally it feels fantastic to be involved in building a vaccine facility from the ground up”, says Maja Johansson, Site Manager in Umeå.
