No more blood doping!
All in the starter's block! Christer Malm and associates
are keen and hopeful to place all athletes on a single starting
line in the name of fair play in sports.
Dr. Malm, a former competitive athlete, is a
WADA-supported researcher who continues to devote his efforts to
the pursuit of finding novel sensitive biomarkers to detect changes
in the blood or muscle tissue of athletes of sanctioned
(amateur or professional) sports competitions globally. Using
state of the art technology, Dr. Malm with PhD student Andreas Hult
were able to detect a unique biomarker profile that suggests
deliberate alteration by an athlete to gain an unfair advantage
over his competitors.
Christer Malm is the first Umeå Biotech Incubator (UBI)
project owner to be awarded Vinnova's Vinn Verifiering grant, a
highly competitive national innovation development fund to develop
a commercial product. With the help of Nelson Khoo (UBI, Strategy
and Business Development) and Jan Brundell (Product
Development), the project proposal was one of two selected
among the numerous submitted in the call. The goal of the project
is to develop a robust diagnostic test to detect altered biomarkers
in the blood to fill an unmet need in the area. This award will
allow the project team to continue work to develop the necessary
reagents to create a sensitive ELISA test. UBI AB will continue to
offer expertise from its network of contacts to allow Dr. Malm to
grow and develop his commercial dream.Örjan Norberg, (CEO, UBI)
said; "I am very pleased and excited to see Dr. Malm's successful
bid for funding. It shows the quality of the projects being
developed inside UBI incubation program. This is the first project
to received the award and speaks well of our efforts to develop
commercial biotech cluster in the region."
