Collaboration project funding - Regional and international
The European Regional Development Fund is a strong contributor to the development of our organisation. Over the years UBI has successfully been awarded a number of long-term-projects and we are currently running the HIBA-project that will be concluded during 2017.
Sustainable incubation contributes to the acceleration of life science ideas (HIBA)
By analysing the trends and development in Swedish life science we could draw the following conclusions: Too few life science startups grow at a rate that match their inherent potential, in part due to a poor understanding of business potential and business ideas within academia and county councils, the relative lack of industrial competence and experience in the region is another contributing factor. As a result, the companies have problems funding their business activities and build sustainable companies.
The projects goal of HIBA is to make better use of the potential within the medical, biological, and biochemical research, to build growing companies with an increasing workforce demand, within the region. Therefore we've analysed and scrutinized the current support and services offered to startups - form early stage to later stages. The project result are expected to yeild a more robust process for life science incubation that will benefit the region in both direct and indirect ways. This regional fund project started in July 1, 2015, is currently running and will be concluded in June 30, 2018. An appointed researcher and controller is included in the project and continously monitors and analyses the outcomes and results.

The Erling-Persson Family Foundation
Knowledge derived from academic research needs support to successfully take the step from academia to industry. To produce high quality complementary data is costly and often requires you to look beyond the traditional funding and research grants.
Through a long-term partnership, the Erling-Persson Family Foundation and Umeå Biotech Incubator, have created more favourable conditions for innovative researchers who want to evaluate the business potential of scientific business idea. With our support the early cases at UBI can to conduct these necessary activities early on and verify their novel research findings.

Owners and mandator funding
UBI receives an annual core funding from some of our owners - so called mandator funding. These public financiers all have a strong interest in healthcare improvement, life science research and regional development. They invest in our organisation in order to promote implementation of scientific knowledge, strengthen evidance in health care and grow life science companies that can contribute to the developmet of our region.
Their investement is currently multiplied several times over due to the national, and international grants awarded the incubator. In total, the annual mandator funding covers less than one fifth of the incubators current turnover.
